The Münchenberg is a nature reserve in the towns of Thale and Quedlinburg in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0065 is around 40.64  hectares . It is completely part of the FFH area "Münchenberg bei Stecklenberg" and almost completely surrounded by the landscape protection area "Harz und Vorländer". The area has been under protection since 1967 (date of regulation: September 11, 1967). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Thale and southwest of Quedlinburg in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . A forest rennet-sessile oak-hornbeam forest on the Münchberg, which gives it its name, is under protection. On the northern slope an increased coppice with common oak , sessile oak , hornbeam , small-leaved lime , Norway maple , sycamore maple , serviceberry and Speierling . The herb layer here is formed by one berry , hazel root , arum , turkish lily , large two-leaf , purple orchid and stately orchid . On the southern slope there is a hazel coppice with liverwort , purple orchid and flywort . It is also intended Cornus -Gebüsche to find that the Munich Berg their northern limit of distribution reach.

The forest was historically used as a hut forest . On former sheep herds, semi- arid grass with schiller grass , fringed gentian , golden thistle , small beaver elf , arum, large-flowered brown elk , horseshoe clover and bog clover has formed. Various species of orchids grow here, including Sitter species , bees and Fliegenragwurz , two Waldvögleinarten , purple orchid and early purple orchid . The open areas are mowed for maintenance. Blood-red cranesbills and deer root grow on the forest fringes . On the southern slope of the Münchenberg there is an approximately 600 year old pedunculate oak , which is designated as a natural monument "sheep oak ".

The nature reserve is the habitat of numerous birds , including wrynecks , red-backed killer , nightingale , oriole , black warbler and various woodpeckers . The dormouse is also native to the area. You can also find midwife toads , reptiles such as sand and forest lizards and slow worms, as well as insects such as stag beetles and swallowtails .
