"Elendstal" nature reserve

The Elendstal is a nature reserve in the town of Oberharz am Brocken in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

General

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0020 is 73.69  hectares in size. It is congruent with the FFH area "Elendstal im Hochharz" and largely surrounded by the landscape protection area "Harz and Vorländer". The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Braunlage and directly north of Elend in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It protects a Kerbsohlental through which the Kalten Bode flows and runs in a north-south direction, and the adjacent slopes of the Barenberg in the west and the Stern in the east. In the nature reserve falter book inventories and species-rich sycamore - ravine forests . The beech stocks, which are mainly on slopes exposed to the south-west, are among the highest in the Harz Mountains . In the herbaceous layer resettle wood sorrel , Polygonatum Verticillatum , heath bedstraw , Forest fescue and reed grass . On slopes exposed to the northeast and in the valley, mixed forest with common spruce has emerged. Here the herb layer is characterized by montane species such as alpine milkweed , plane-leaved buttercup and white butterbur . Furthermore settle here Mercurialis perennis , Great Balsam , Senecio ovatus , Forest fescue and Frauenfarn . Old spruce trees grow in the valley floor, some of which are over 40 m high. The strongest of the spruce trees is called the valley guard .

The shore areas of the Cold Bode are of Hochstaudenfluren lined with Cicerbita Alpina. Here and spring swamps can be found that of Bitter smock , Wechselblättrigem Chrysosplenium and swamp Vergissmeinicht and various mosses are marked. The Kalte Bode is a habitat for brown trout . In the nature reserve are various birds at home, including green and gray-headed woodpecker , stock dove , dipper and gray wagtail . The nature reserve is a feeding area for the capercaillie resettled in the Harz Mountains . The forests are also a habitat for bats Natterer's bat , Brandt's bat , whiskered bat , lesser noctule , nymph bat , Daubenton's bat and pipistrelle . Also Wildcat and Lynx are native to the forests.
