The Harz stream valleys are a nature reserve in the Saxony-Anhalt town of Oberharz am Brocken in the Harz district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG0181 is 1301  hectares . It is located within the FFH area of the same name . In the west it goes into the nature reserve " Bachtäler im Oberharz um Braunlage " in Lower Saxony .

The area was placed under nature protection by ordinance of June 11, 1998. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The widely ramified nature reserve includes the Warme Bode between the state border with Lower Saxony and Königshütte and the Rappbode from its source to Trautenstein a little above the Rappbodetalsperre and its floodplains , tributaries and adjacent mountain slopes.

The tributaries of the Warmen Bode within the nature reserve include u. a. Bremke , Allerbach , Spielbach as well as Ochsenbach and Ebersbach. In the Rappbode open u. a. Krugbergwasser, Giepenbach, Schieferbach and Dammbach. Two further tributaries, which are included in the nature reserve, flow below Trautenstein into the Rappbodevorsperre and the Rappbodetalsperre.

The nature reserve is characterized by a widely branched system of near-natural running water systems with the corresponding flora and fauna typical of the area. The streams with their river gravel fields are of alder and spruce swamp forests and riparian forest areas and predominantly wet meadows areas with montane meadow ngesellschaften and Nardus grasslands and Hochstaudenfluren accompanied. In addition, spring swamps are Moor , Flusssaum-, - cornices - and rushes companies as well as small - and tall sedge to find.

The aim of protection is the preservation and development of the area in its natural form. This includes, in particular, the preservation and revitalization of the dynamic development of the watercourse and the restoration of ecological continuity as well as the preservation and development of near-natural forest stands, in particular deciduous and mixed forest stands and wooded lines accompanying the banks.

Parts of the reserve are country - and forestry as well as for hunting and fishing used. The Rappbode is from its source to the railway bridge of the Harz narrow-gauge railways , the Warme Bode from the source of the Bremke to the road bridge of the federal highway 242 on the state border between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, from the railway bridge of the Harz narrow-gauge railways to the road bridge at the entrance of Sorge , from the mouth of Allerbach to the confluence of the Bode altarms and of the mouth of the game Bach to the Bode weir in Konigshiitte reported as early period district where fishing is prohibited.

Numerous hiking trails lead through the nature reserve.

Flora and fauna

On lean mountain meadows, which can be found in particular on steeper middle and upper slopes, but also on flat plateau areas, u. a. Barwort , small rattlespot and tormentil . On the moist mountain meadows are u. a. You can find bog herb , globe flower , irises such as the Siberian iris , broad-leaved orchid and swamp violet . In damp meadows near the stream, etc. a. Globe flower and Siberian iris, but also marsh thistle , marsh pinnau and broad-leaved and spotted orchid . The bristle grass lawns stand out u. a. with resin rennet, arnica , autumn crocus , bearwort and wire-haired violet . Swampy areas are occupied by Kleinseggenrieder, in which the narrow-leaved cottongrass grows, as well as plant communities of the heart leaf flea sedge swamp, where z. B. the flea sedge occur.

Dipper , kingfisher , meadow pipit , whinchat , red backed killer and carmine fin and numerous other bird species occur as breeding birds . The nature reserve is a food biotope for the black stork .

The streams are retreats for native species of the upper and middle trout region ( Rhithral ). These include u. a. Fish such as brook lamprey , western ball , minnow ; Hazel , loach and autochthonous brown trout and other aquatic animals such as decapods , stone flies , mayflies , caddis flies and various beetles .

There are also numerous other insects , including dragonflies such as the blue-winged demoiselle , the striped spring damsel and the double- striped spring damsel , the peat damsel and the little moss damsel .

In the nature reserve there are also butterflies such as the great fire butterfly and quail wheat piebald butterflies, as well as grasshoppers such as the small golden insect , the short-winged bite insect , the common thorn insect , the spotted club insect and the red club insect .

Ponds and small bodies of water in the nature reserve are home to common frog , common toad and mountain - and palmate newt . Occurring reptiles are u. a. Slow worm and forest lizard .
