The Große Fallstein is a nature reserve in the town of Osterwieck in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0029 is 70.84  hectares . It is part of the FFH area "Fallstein area north of Osterwieck" and is completely surrounded by the landscape protection area "Waldgebiet des Fallstein". The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Osterwieck in the Großer Fallstein . It protects the forest areas on the summit of the Hohe Fallstein and the hillside exposed to the northeast. On the out shell formed ridge increased to shallow soil clay soil a woodruff Buchwald , which in a mixed beech and into deeper layers in an Oak Grove Buchwald passes. The red beech dominates the summit of the Hohe Fallstein . Common ash , sycamore maple and common bird cherry also grow here . The herb layer is dominated by forest fescue . There are also grass clown , brownwort and forest sedge . Common lady fern and common gold nettle also grow in small areas .

Red beech, sessile oak , hornbeam , summer and winter linden and bird cherry grow in the areas where mixed forests grow thick . Here the bush layer is u. a. of common daphne and the herb layer u. a. formed by forest barley , forest flutter grass , liverwort , lungwort and spring flowers .

The nature reserve is u. a. Habitat for various birds of prey , including the red kite . The woodcock is also found here.
