History and architecture
The general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, provided for the construction of a lighthouse on the Ponta dos Ilhéus de Água Quente in the southwest of the island of Flores. At the suggestion of the frigate captain Xavier de Brito, however, the decision in favor of the Ponta das Lajes was made in 1894. In 1898 the buildings were largely completed. The commissioning of the lighthouse was delayed until 1910. Until then, the passage from Flores remained dangerous. In 1909 the steamship RMS Slavonia of the British Cunard Line ran with over 400 passengers on the cliffs of the Ilhéu da Baixa Rasa in the southwest of the island.
The one-story white brick building, which also houses the lighthouse keeper's apartment, has a T-shaped floor plan and is covered with red roof tiles. The metal dome of the 16 m high, square tower is also painted red. When the lighthouse went into operation on October 10, 1910, the light produced by an oil lamp had a range of 32 nautical miles. Even then, he sent out three white flashes of light in regular succession. The plant was modernized in 1938 and electrified in 1956. A 3000 W incandescent lamp with a range of 29 nm served as the light source . In 1984 the power was reduced to 1000 W and the range to 26 nm. It was not until 1990 that the lighthouse was connected to the public power grid .
