The Farol da Ponta do Arnel is a lighthouse in the east of the Azores island of São Miguel . With the exception of a small beacon on the pier in Ponta Delgada , it is the oldest lighthouse in the Azores. It stands in the municipality of Nordeste on a promontory of the Ponta do Arnel . The lighthouse is registered under the international number D-2640 and the national number 704. It irradiates a sector from 157 ° to 358 ° and has a range of 25  nautical miles .

History and architecture

As early as 1866, the engineer and later Vice Admiral Francisco Maria Pereira da Silva (1813-1891) recommended the construction of a lighthouse in the east of São Miguel in a study. However, it was not until November 26th, 1876 that the lighthouse could be handed over to its intended purpose. The 15 m high octagonal tower with a surrounding gallery carries the red lacquered metal dome on a round base. The tower, like the octagonal residential and farm building of the lighthouse keeper at its base, is painted white. The tower initially had second-order Fresnel optics with a focal length of 700 mm. In 1937, the originally installed mineral oil firing was replaced by an oil vapor lamp. The person responsible for the rotation of the optical movement has been replaced. From 1954 it was replaced by a gas engine. At the same time, the lighthouse received third-order optics with a focal length of 375 mm. Its range was now 21 nm. In 1955 a generator was installed. The lighthouse now worked with a 3000 W incandescent lamp . The gas light ( Ethin ) installed a year earlier only served as an emergency reserve. The lighthouse got an electric motor and a new third-order optics in 1990. In 1993 it was connected to the power grid .
