The Farol da Ponta da Ferraria is a lighthouse on Cape Ponta da Ferraria in the west of the Azores island of São Miguel . It is in the parish of Ginetes . The lighthouse is registered under the international number D-2655 and the national number 719. It irradiates a sector from 339 ° to 174 ° and has a range of 27 nautical miles .
History and design
The general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, provided for the construction of a lighthouse on the Ponta da Ferraria . The original plan to build a second-order lighthouse with a range of 25.5 nautical miles was changed in 1891. It was now believed that a third-order lighthouse with a range of 15 to 20 nautical miles would be sufficient. The implementation of the project dragged on until 1901. It finally started operations on November 9th. In 1957 the lighthouse was converted to electrical operation and received a 3000 W incandescent lamp. With the connection to the public power grid, the output was reduced to 1000 W.
The square tower is embedded in the main facade of a two-story, rectangular brick building, at the rear of which there are two one-story extensions. The entire building, which is inhabited by the lighthouse keeper's family, is plastered and whitewashed. Its two floors are visually separated by a surrounding cornice . The building is covered with red roof tiles. The dome of the tower is painted red and has a weather vane . A low white wall surrounds the property.
