description
The Farol do Carapacho is a round, unplastered concrete tower with eight vertical ribs. He has a lantern and a gallery, the metal parts of which are painted red. There is a one-story building at the foot of the lighthouse. There are three outbuildings within the walls of the lighthouse complex. The lighthouses Farol da Ponta do Cintrão and Farol da Ponta Garça on São Miguel, which went into operation in 1957, are identical to the Farol do Carapacho.
history
The general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, provided for the construction of a lighthouse with fourth-order optics, which should emit one white flash per minute as an identifier. The range should be an average of 19 nautical miles. After the plan was adapted in 1902, only fifth-order optics were to be used. It took until May 26, 1956, until the lighthouse was erected and handed over to its intended purpose. It was initially operated with an acetylene gas fire and fifth-order optics (focal length 187.5 mm). A clock mechanism was used for their rotation . The red light, emitted in groups of two flashes, extended 19 nautical miles. In 1961 it was switched to white light, which increased the range to 20 nautical miles. A sun valve installed in 1978 ensured that the beacon switched itself on and off depending on the external light conditions. In 1987 the lighthouse was electrified and connected to the public power grid, whereby the old optics were replaced by fixed optics 6th order (focal length 150 mm). Since then, a 12 V 50 W metal halide lamp has served as the light source .
