The Farol da Ponta da Ilha or Farol da Manhenha is a lighthouse on Cape Ponta da Ilha in the east of the Azores island of Pico . It is in the municipality of Calheta de Nesquim . The lighthouse is registered under the international number D-2690 and the national number 814. It irradiates a sector from 166 ° to 070 ° and has a range of 24  nautical miles .

History and architecture

The general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, already provided for the construction of a second-order lighthouse with a range of 25.5 nm at Cape Ponta da Ilha. The realization of the plan did not start until 1942 with the acquisition of 1000 m² of land. On July 21, 1946, the lighthouse - now of the fifth order - was put into operation.

The 19-meter-high, square tower is connected to a one-story white brick building with a U-shaped floor plan, which serves as an apartment for the lighthouse keeper and his family, and also contains storage rooms. The metal dome of the tower is painted red. When the lighthouse started operating in 1946, the light produced by an oil lamp had a range of 26 nautical miles. In 1958 the lighting system was electrified. A 3000 W incandescent lamp now served as the light source . In 1987 the optics were modernized. It was not until 1993 that the lighthouse was connected to the public power grid .
