description

The square brick tower stands in the center of four single-story, interconnected buildings that were built as residential buildings for the families of the lighthouse keepers . The walls of these buildings are painted white, while the cornice of the flat roof , the plinth, the window sills and the door and window lintels are gray. The white tower carries a red painted metal lantern with gallery and weather vane . The building complex is surrounded by a stone wall with several outbuildings to the west of the tower. The building complex provides space for three lighthouse keeper's apartments, two warehouses, an office and a control room.

The coast of Ponta das Contendas and the offshore islets are an important breeding area of the river and the roseate tern . The latter has its largest population here in the Azores. BirdLife International identifies an area of 90 hectares as Important Bird Area PT068 “Contendas”.

history

The Portuguese Commission for Beacons approved the construction of a lighthouse on the Ponta das Contendas on March 2, 1882. It should be equipped with second-order optics and irradiate a 240 ° sector. However, the general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, provided for the site at Ponta de São Jorge, just under six kilometers to the northeast. After the plan was adapted in 1902, a fifth-order optic was to be used at the originally planned location on the Ponta das Contendas. However, it was not until 1926 that the required property was bought. In 1928 construction began under the direction of António Tomaz, incorporating the masonry of an old military fortification. The required building material was transported to the construction site by ox cart. On February 1, 1934, the lighthouse began operating. It was equipped with third-order rotating optics and an oil lamp . The range was 32 nautical miles. The identifier was four white flashes within 15 seconds. In the course of the electrification of the lighthouse, the range of its light was increased to 38 nautical miles in 1958. In 1964 the access road to the lighthouse was completed and the connection to the public water network was implemented. In 1983 the power of the lamp was reduced to 1000 W. After that, the lighthouse only shone 23 nautical miles. In 1985, two red light sectors were introduced to draw attention to dangers such as the Fradinhos rocky island and the Ilhéus das Cabras . The Farol da Ponta das Contendas has been connected to the public electricity network since 1998.
