The Farol da Ponta do Topo is a lighthouse on the Ponta do Topo in the southeast of the Azores island of São Jorge . It is in the municipality of Topo in Calheta County . The lighthouse is registered under the international number D-2680 and the national number 772. It irradiates a sector from 133 ° to 033 ° and has a range of 20 nautical miles .
History and architecture
The general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, provided for the construction of a lighthouse with fourth-order optics on the Ponta do Topo . Its range should be 13.5 nautical miles for steady light and 19 nautical miles for lightning. After the plan was adapted in 1902, a fifth-order optic was to be used. But it was not until 1923 before the property was acquired. From 1925 construction was carried out according to plans by the engineer José Joaquim Peres. The lighthouse went into operation on July 15, 1927.
The one-story white brick building, which also houses the lighthouse keeper's apartment, has a rectangular floor plan. The metal dome of the 16 m high, round tower with gallery is painted red. When the lighthouse started operating, it was equipped with a gas light , with an oil lamp as a reserve. A clock mechanism was used to rotate the optics. The plant was electrified in 1957. A 3000 W incandescent lamp with a range of 44 nautical miles served as the light source . The earthquake of January 1, 1980 severely damaged the lighthouse. Two of the outbuildings collapsed. The old Fresnel lens had to be removed and is now in the Museu de Marinha in Lisbon . It was replaced by optics that had previously been in the Esposende lighthouse . In 1987 it was exchanged for a PRB-46 optic. Two years later the lighthouse was connected to the power grid. In 2001 a TRB-400 automatic rotating optic was installed.
