Calheta ( [ kɐˈʎetɐ ] ) is a small town (Vila) on the Azores island of São Jorge , Portugal with 1275 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Calheta is one of the oldest localities ( povoações ) in São Jorge; it grew rapidly after its foundation in 1493, because its port made it considerably easier to connect to the nearest island of Terceira in the northeast.
On June 3, 1534 Calheta was by King João III. raised to a vila .
In the course of history, the place was attacked and devastated by pirates and corsairs several times , for example in 1597. As a result, the Forte da Preguiça was built in Calheta , which is still preserved today and has been renovated.
A particularly strong earthquake occurred on July 9, 1757, called Mandado de Deus . On October 4, 1945, a severe tsunami caused destruction.
