Velas ( [ ˈvɛlɐʃ ] ) is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) on the Azores island of São Jorge , Portugal , with 1985 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
After the seizure of the island of São Jorge began here with the release of sheep in 1439, the village of Velas was established in 1460. It received city rights from King Manuel I around 1500 and was elevated to the status of a vila. In the 17th century the place received the fortress Santa Cruz, which was also known under the names "Castelo de Santa Cruz", "Reduto de Santa Cruz" and "Forte das Velas". On July 9, 1757 , the island experienced a strong earthquake that claimed many victims and caused great damage.

Buildings
The parish church Igreja de São Jorge with an attached museum, which was built in 1460 and remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the town hall ( Câmara Municipal ) from the 17th century are among the most striking buildings in the city . From the city wall, which was built to protect against attacks by pirates, the city gate Portão do Mar from 1799 at the harbor has been preserved. From the fortress Forte de Santa Cruz , built in the 17th century and partially demolished in 1965 as part of the expansion of the city's port facilities, parts of the walls with a crowd watchtower still stand . The Forte de Nossa Senhora da Conceicão , built in 1644, was renovated at the beginning of the 21st century. The modern cultural and event center Auditório Municipal e Centro Cultural das Velas was then built on the site of the fortress .
In the district of Bairro da Conceição stands the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição church with an adjoining monastery from the 18th century, which now houses the city's hospital after appropriate renovations. The colorfully decorated Holy Spirit Chapel Império do Bairro da Conceição was built not far from here in 1947 and renovated in 2008. The Arco da Conceição , a natural arch of volcanic basalt created by the surf and considered one of the landmarks of the city, rises on the coastal section in the district, which is characterized by rugged lava rock .
Surroundings
The city is dominated in the northwest by the 161 m high volcanic cone Morro Grande. On the Punta da Queimada peninsula, not far south-east of the city, the remains of the Forte de São Miguel o Anjo fortress built between 1699 and 1708 can be seen. The airport of the island of São Jorge is located around 8 km southeast of Velas .
