Corvo ( [ ˈkoɾvu ] ) is the north-westernmost and with an area of 17.11 square kilometers the smallest inhabited island of the Azores . Together with the island of Flores , 15 km away , it forms the western group of the Azores. With 430 inhabitants, the only settlement Vila do Corvo is one of the smallest cities in Europe. Corvo and Flores were discovered by Diogo de Teive and his son in 1452 as the last islands in the Azores.
General
Corvo (German: Rabe ) consists of an extinct volcano , Monte Gordo , which forms a 2 km wide and 300 m deep caldera , at the bottom of which is a lake called Lagoa do Caldeirão . On the southern edge of the caldera is the 718 m high Morro dos Homens ("hill of the people"), the highest point on the island. Except for the somewhat flatter south, the island's shores are characterized by steep cliffs. The surface consists of green, crater pastures typical of the island, which are grazed by cows. The meat and other products from cattle farming are sold in Lisbon and form the income base for the residents of Corvo.
The island has a small regional airport , a fire department, an island school and several accommodations where tourists can also stay. The airport has a runway that is only 800 meters short, the only two destinations offered are the neighboring island of Flores and Ponta Delgada , the capital of the Azores on the island of São Miguel .
In 2007 UNESCO added the island to the list of biosphere reserves . The documentary É na terra nicht é na lua (2007) testifies to life on the island .
Corvo County
Corvo is the least populous district in Portugal . It covers the entire area of the island and therefore does not border on any other circle, but only on the Atlantic Ocean .
