Lagoa do Caldeirão (Portuguese for "boiler lake") is the only lake on the Portuguese Azores island of Corvo . It lies at the bottom of the caldera of Monte Gordo and covers about 25 hectares. Its water is mesotrophic .
Strictly speaking, one has to speak of a lake landscape and not of a lake, since two lakes are meant close together, which can be divided into an approx. 9 hectare eastern and an approx. 15-16 hectare western lake. But even in official documents of the regional government of the Azores only one lake is mentioned. In the case of drought, even more partial lakes can form, as the lakes are very shallow and the transition to swampy areas, especially in the western lake, is partially fluid anyway.
After prolonged rain, the lake fills up and the excess water then falls steeply into the sea on the west side of the island.
According to legend, the islands of the lake are a reflection of the Azores.
