Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo , sometimes just called Ilhéu de Vila , is a small island off the coastal town of Vila Franca do Campo on the Azores island of São Miguel .
geography
The island with a total area of 61,640 m² is about 500 meters off the coast. It is up to 62 meters high and 420 meters long in an east-west direction. The island consists of a single volcanic vent , the crater wall of which is broken on the north side towards the sea. This created the almost circular crater lagoon Lagoa do Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo with a diameter of 150 meters, which is often used as a “natural swimming pool” by locals and tourists during the summer months. In the east of the island are the rocks Baixa da Cozinha and Farilhão .
Flora and fauna
The higher areas of the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo are dominated by no longer cultivated vineyards. In two places there are “forests” of ironwood trees ( Metrosideros tomentosa ). Most of the island is overgrown with the endemic tree heather ( Erica azorica ). A plant community of rock fescue ( Festuca petraea ), rush ( Juncus acutus ), wild carrot ( Daucus carota ), long-lived goldenrod ( Solidago sempervirens ) and sea fennel ( Crithmum maritimum ) can be found on the cliff coast .
Two species of seabirds breed on the island's inaccessible rocks , the yellow-billed shearwater and the common tern . The shearwater , the Madeira wave runner and the rose tern also occur, but they do not breed here.
