Adelheid Fanny Martha Stettler (born September 25, 1870 in Bern , † December 16, 1945 in Châtillon ) was a Swiss painter .

life and work

Martha Stettler was the daughter of the Bernese architect , draftsman and watercolorist Eugen Stettler and Clara Stettler-von Fischer. In the years 1886 to 1891 she trained at the Bern Art School with Wilhelm Benteli (1839–1924) and Paul Volmar (1832–1906). In 1892 she switched to Léon Gaud (1844–1908) and Henri Hébert (1849–1917) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva . In 1893, Stettler moved to Paris , where she briefly studied at the Académie Julian before studying with Luc-Olivier Merson (1846–1920) from 1894 to 1898 . In 1898 she moved to Lucien Simon's (1861–1945) studio . Martha Stettler commented on her change as follows: "It was like walking out of a dim room into the sunshine."

She was a co-founder of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (whose students included Alberto Giacometti and Meret Oppenheim ) and from 1909 to the end of 1943 also its director together with the Baltic painter Alice Dannenberg (1861–1948). Stettler exhibited her works in Paris and Switzerland. She received in 1910 at the World Exhibition of Brussels a medal. She was the first woman to exhibit at the Biennale di Venezia in 1920.

She toured Europe and often spent the summer months in the Bernese Oberland . Stettler liked to paint children's scenes in Parisian parks and interiors, landscapes and still lifes . It is attributed to the late impressionists. Stettler's work was widely recognized during her lifetime. After her death, her works were increasingly forgotten.

Martha Stettler belonged to the Bernese patrician family of the Stettler . She thus had the citizenship rights of the city of Bern . She was unmarried. Stettler's grave was on the Cimetière parisien de Bagneux .
