The Monchique Islet is a large, 43-meter-high basaltic volcanic rocks in the Atlantic Ocean , the Portuguese Azores -Insel Flores west upstream and 1.7 km from this.

Ilhéu do Monchique is the westernmost island in the Azores. It is located a good four kilometers north of the town of Fajã Grande on Flores and even if the place on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is already on the North American Plate , the island is often regarded as the westernmost point in Europe . At the time of Christian seafaring , Monchique was used to calibrate the instruments for determining the position of the stars.

The island and the surrounding waters are characterized by a high level of biodiversity . In the surf zone there are mollusks such as the common limpet and the mermaid swims in the sea . Whales appear depending on the season.

In Lajes das Flores , the only newspaper on the island named after the rock is published monthly O Monchique .
