About this picture
Location of Tidofeld in the urban area from the north

Tidofeld has been an independent district of the East Frisian city of Norden since 1996 and has around 1000 inhabitants (at the end of 2016) spread over an area of just 0.47 km². The district is structurally completely fused with the city center. Tidofeld was part of the municipality of Lütetsburg until 1952 .

history

The name Tidofeld goes back to a castle built on this site in the 17th century. It was built by Tido Freiherr zu Innhausen and Knyphausen (1582–1638). Baron Tido was a brother of Field Marshal Dodo zu Innhausen and Knyphausen .

Special importance was Tidofeld fact that after the Second World War in a former barracks of the Armed Forces (Navy transit camp) was a displaced persons camp with 6,000 inhabitants (one of the largest camps in Germany). In the middle of the camp, a barrack was converted into a church building. It was the forerunner of the Gnadenkirche, built in 1961, and - after its profanation - today's documentation center.

Attractions

Gnadenkirche Tidofeld (built 1961), today a documentation center on the history of the displaced

One of the sights of Tidofeld is a permanent exhibition in the profaned Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grace Tidofeld , which documents the flight and expulsion of residents of the former German eastern territories as well as the Tidofeld camp for refugees . This project is under the patronage of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister David McAllister . Margot Käßmann , former regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover, was also the patron of the Documentation Center until her resignation.
