The area of today's district was incorporated to the north during the Lower Saxony municipal reform in 1972, until then it was an independent municipality. With the Leegemoor industrial and commercial area, Süderneuland I has by far the largest and most important commercial area in the north. The northern train station is also in the area of the district.

history

Historic engine shed on the area of the former municipality of Süderneuland I

During the Dionysus flood in 1373, the Leybucht expanded and, among other things, flooded large parts of what is now the northern part of the city. The area of Süderneuland was diked again in the 16th and 17th centuries. The reclamation of new land in this area was completed during the reign of the Prussian King Frederick the Great . For draining the reclaimed lands one was Siel necessary that after the king Fridericussiel was named. A street in the district still bears the name Am Fridericussiel today .

Today's Norder Hauptbahnhof was built in 1885. Ten years later, Bahnhofsstrasse was also laid out, today's Bundesstrasse 72 . Today's Deichmühle was built in 1900 . In the district there is also the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Peace .

On July 1, 1972, the municipality Süderneuland I was incorporated into the city of Norden.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Süderneuland I there is a primary school and the Evangelical Lutheran Peace Church on Addingaster Weg. The Onno Behrends tea trading company , one of three East Frisian tea trading houses that are allowed to sell tea with the addition of real East Frisian tea, is based in the district. There are a large number of companies in the Leegemoor industrial and commercial area, including several with a three-digit number of employees. The industrial park is by far the largest in the north of the city and plays an important role in the urban economy. The area is located at the southern end of the city, so it is most conveniently located via the B 72 and (from Georgsheil ) the B 210 to the A 31 in Emden .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the district shows a red open gate under a blue shield head . The intertwined black letters F and R, the monogram of Frederick the Great, can be seen under the archway of the Siel. The head of the shield has three golden six-pointed spur wheels , which indicate the location of the place near the city.
