The nail matrix , also called the nail root, forms the cells that make up the fingernail or toenail . It is located above the nail moon and is protected by the cuticle on top.

The nail matrix is ​​the actual growth zone. The nail matrix is ​​created by an invagination of the epidermis . The dead skin cells do not peel off in the area of ​​the nail matrix.
