The Farol da Ribeirinha is a former lighthouse near Ribeirinha in the east of the Azores island of Faial , which was abandoned after an earthquake on July 8, 1998.

History and architecture

The general plan for lighting the Portuguese coasts of 1883, which also took the Azores into account, provided for the construction of a lighthouse with fourth-order optics near Ribeirinha. Its range should be 13 nautical miles for continuous white light. In 1902 a commission suggested the use of sixth-order optics. Three white flashes with a range of 17.2 nautical miles should be generated at regular intervals. In 1913, 3000 m² of land on the Ponta da Ribeirinha was acquired. Construction began in 1915 and took four years. The lighthouse went into operation on November 1, 1919.

The brick lighthouse had a square cross-section and was clad with white tiles. Its dome was painted red and contained a second-order Fresnel optic that was rotated by clockwork. Initially, a kerosene lamp served as the light source . The tower stood between two parallel, one-story, white-tiled buildings with storage rooms and the living quarters of the lighthouse keeper's family. In 1937 an oil vapor lamp was installed as a new light source. The range of the light signal increased from 28 to 34 nautical miles. In 1958 the lighthouse was electrified with the help of a generator and equipped with a 3000 W incandescent lamp. If an earthquake in 1973 caused considerable damage, it caused cracks in the tower on January 1, 1980, but did not restrict its function. On July 9, 1998, however, the earth in the Ribeirinha area shook so strongly (M W = 6.1) that Ribeirinha was destroyed and the lighthouse was also seriously damaged, so that it had to be abandoned. As a makeshift fire, a solar powered ML-300 lantern was mounted on a five meter high metal pole. Equipped with a halogen bulb (12 V, 50 W), the light now shines 12 nautical miles.
