Ernesto Lupercio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernesto Lupercio (* 1970 ) is a Mexican mathematician who studies algebraic geometry , algebraic topology and mathematical physics .

He received his PhD from Stanford University in 1997 with Ralph Cohen (Real Holomorphic Bott Periodicity, Loop Groups and Stabilization of Monopoles). As a post-doctoral student he was at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn. In 1998 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan and from 1999 to 2000 Van Vleck Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . From 2003 he researched and taught at the CINVESTAV (Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico City .

Lupercio deals with orbifolds , special quotient spaces with singularities with finite groups as symmetry groups. They have applications in string theory . In this context he made fundamental contributions to K-theory, tanning and string topology (operations of the Chas-Sullivan type). He co-founded the theory of tanning about orbifolds and introduced loop orbifolds.

In 2007 he became a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences , whose Rolac Prize he received. For 2009 he received the ICTP Ramanujan Prize for outstanding contributions to algebraic topology, geometry and mathematical physics (laudation) and for his contributions to the development of mathematics in Mexico. In 2011 he was appointed to the Global Young Academy .
