Ginetes is a town and municipality in the west of São Miguel , an island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores .

The Cape Ponta da Ferraria is in the area of the municipality. Here is the Termas da Ferraria, a thermal bath with a spa , and a bit next to it are natural swimming pools fed by hot springs as public baths with shower and toilet facilities. Further above is the Farol da Ponta da Ferraria lighthouse . The lighthouse, built in 1901, is one of the most beautiful on the island. Official hiking trails lead through the municipality, especially along the Cape of Ponta da Ferraria .

history

The village was established at the end of the 15th / beginning of the 16th century. It was initially called São Sebastião de Ginetes and was a village in the municipality of Candelária . The first parish church was built from 1521 and completed in 1557. After 1568 Ginetes became an independent municipality. The congregation then continued to grow, and in 1603 today's parish church was built.

Creation of the island of Sabrina in front of Ginetes, drawing by Lt. John William Miles of the British HMS Sabrina (June 1811)

In 1713 an earthquake before the eruption of the Pico das Camarinhas volcano destroyed a number of houses in Ginetes.

On June 10, 1811, an underwater volcanic eruption in several eruptions off the coast of Ginete not only damaged a large number of houses on land, but also created a new island in the sea in front of it. The British frigate HMS Sabrina, lying in Ponta Delgada, attended the creation of the island and took possession of it for the British crown under the name of the Isle of Sabrina . Not even a year later the island sank again. The episode became internationally known and temporarily caused tension in British-Portuguese relations . Even Alexander von Humboldt mentioned the incident in the first volume of his Kosmos that served mainly as a scientific illustrative example. The Miradouro da Ilha Sabrina viewpoint in front of the former island of Sabrina is reminiscent of the island in its name.

In 1971 the municipality of Sete Cidades was re-created by outsourcing it from the municipality of Ginetes.
