Capelas is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Ponta Delgada on the Azores island of São Miguel . It has 4080 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The parish has existed since 1592 and the Nossa Senhora da Apresentacao church was built between 1767 and 1806.

economy

From early to the middle of the 20th century, the population went whaling . The parish commemorates this time with a memorial opposite the church.

Today tourism determines economic activity with hotels, golf courses, restaurants and supermarkets. The old whaling bay is used as a sea swimming pool.
