Candelária is a town and municipality in the west of São Miguel , an island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores .

history

The listed parish church Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Candeias was built in 1535 and then expanded and redesigned several times, especially in the 17th century and between 1811 and 1826

Candelária was settled during the 15th century and got its name after the patron saint Nossa Senhora das Candeias ( Our Lady of Light ). In 1535 the first parish church was built.

In 1568 the now independent community of Ginetes split off.

In 1713 a strong earthquake destroyed part of the village.

The community continued to grow despite the adverse circumstances (earthquakes, winds and storms from the nearby sea), and in the 19th century reached its highest population with up to 1263 inhabitants.
