São José is a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) in the Ponta Delgada district . It has 5934 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The village arose in connection with the fortress Castelo de São Brás , built in the middle of the 16th , later also called Forte de São Brás . It was expanded in the 18th and then in the 19th. The Azores Military Headquarters was established here in 1940, before the Azores Military Museum opened here in 2006.
