Berta Maria Correia de Almeida de Melo Cabral (* 1952 , São José ) is a social democratic politician from the Azores ( Portugal ).

Berta Cabral is the daughter of Jacinto Joaquim Almeida and Maria da Conceição Correia de Almeida . She is married to the economist Leonel de Melo Cabral . Together they have two children: Tiago and Mafalda .

education and profession

Cabral graduated from the Lisbon School of Economics and Management at the Technical University of Lisbon in 1975 with a degree in finance / economics .

During the 1980s she was Regional Director for Finance, Transportation and Communications for some time before becoming Regional Secretary for Finance and Public Administration in the Mota Amaral government (until 1991). She took on other public administrative tasks in the Azores with the Eléctrica Açoriana (EDA, 1991-1994), the airline SATA Air Açores (1994-1996) and the Legislative Assembly of the Azores ( pt . : Assembleia Legislativa dos Açores ). In 2001 she was elected first mayor of the city of Ponta Delgada . In 2008, she was the first woman to be elected chairman of the Social Democratic Party of the Azores with 98.5% of the vote (until 2012). In 2012, she was appointed to the Ministry of Defense in the cabinet of Pedro Passos Coelho . Since October 30, 2015 she has been a member of the Portuguese Parliament ( Assembleia da República ).
