The parish church from the 17th century

Pilar da Bretanha is a town and a municipality on São Miguel , the largest island of about Portugal belonging Azores .

history

After the discovery of the island at the beginning of the 15th century, Portuguese settlers settled here on the coastal areas from the end of the 15th century, mainly from the Alto Alentejo and Estremadura . Later settlers from Great Britain and Brittany joined them. This was the origin of the name of the area, which was first officially documented in 1527 under the name Bretanha , and which soon became a separate municipality. In 1960 the then independent municipality of Remédios split off before Bretanha was divided into Pilar da Bretanha and Ajuda da Bretanha in 2002 .
