João Bom is a village with around 300 inhabitants in the northwest of the Azores island of São Miguel . The place belongs to the municipality of Pilar da Bretanha in the Ponta Delgada district .
Culture and sights
João Bom lies at the foot of the Caldeira Sete Cidades . The lake offers bathing opportunities and restaurants. The most important event in the place as in the Azores in general are the Holy Spirit festivals with the Whitsun parades as the highlights. In the municipality of Pilar de Bretanha they are u. a. dedicated to the Império de João Bom , a small local chapel.
The German artist couple Karin and Bernd Kilian have settled in the place that creates and sells pictures and sculptures there. An artistically decorated garden including a holiday home is a frequently photographed attraction of the place.
Economy and Transport
The place is on the coastal road ER 1-1. The bus lines 208, 209, 219 and 222 connect it up to nine times a day with the capital Ponta Delgada (as of 2013). João Bom has a small supermarket and two cafes. Tourism plays a role in the form of some private holiday homes.
