Alto Alentejo ( Portuguese for Upper Beyond the Tejo or Upper Alentejo ) was one of the eleven provinces of Portugal from 1936 to 1976 . Today they only exist in colloquial language or in historically based terms.

Évora was the capital of the province. It included the area of today 's Évora district and almost the entire Portalegre district , with the exception of the Ponte de Sor district , which belonged to the Ribatejo .

In today's administrative division of Portugal, the term Alto Alentejo only refers to the statistical sub-region of the Alto Alentejo .
