Keith Norman Sutton (born June 23, 1934 - March 24, 2017 in Surrey , England ) was a British bishop of the Church of England .

Life

After training at Jesus College in Cambridge , he was bishop of Kingston upon Thames from 1978 to 1984 . He was then the 97th Bishop of Lichfield until 2003 .

He was married to Jean Sutton and had four children.

Professional background

Keith Sutton taught from 1968 to 1973 at Bishop Tucker Theological College in Mukono , Uganda , now part of Uganda Christian University . From 1962 to 1967 he was Chaplain of St John's College in Cambridge . He was Principal of Ridley Hall from 1973 to 1978 and Bishop of Kingston upon Thames from 1978 to 1984. In July 1985, Sutton was sent to South Africa by the Archbishop of Canterbury as part of a special delegation to support Archbishop Desmond Tutu , who was being harassed by the South African government. He retired in Cornwall and served as an honorary assistant bishop in the dioceses of Truro and Exeter .

House of Lords

From 1989 to 2003, Sutton was a spiritual lord in the House of Lords .
