The Arcaden Paul Hunter Classic 2013 (also European Tour 2013/14 - Event 4 ) was a snooker tournament as part of the Players Tour Championship 2013/14 , which was held from 22 to 25 August 2013 in the town hall in Fürth , Germany . For the tenth time in a row, the Middle Franconian city hosted a tournament with amateurs and professionals.

As in the previous two years, some games of the qualifying rounds on Thursday were played in the Nuremberg billiards center “Ballroom”, as was the amateur cup up to the quarter-finals, which was held again this year.

Defending champion was the Englishman Mark Selby , who won the tournament in 2011 and 2012 . With the exception of Stephen Lee , the top 30 in the world rankings had registered for the tournament, including, for the second time since 2011, audience favorite Ronnie O'Sullivan , Mark Williams was the only one who did not participate in the tournament. The start list consisted of 228 professionals and amateurs. 50 of them came from German-speaking countries, including professional Patrick Einsle , who won the EBSA Qualifying Tour's amateur cup in the previous year , which enabled him to return to the Main Tour.

The winner was Ronnie O'Sullivan, who clearly defeated the surprise finalist Gerard Greene from Northern Ireland 4-0 in the final. It was O'Sullivan's third win at a PTC tournament. For the 39-year-old Greene it was the first ever final participation in a tournament for world ranking points.

The winner of the amateur cup was the Englishman Sydney Wilson , who also made it into the top 128 of the main tournament.

Preliminary round

Half of the registered participants were seeded for the main tournament from Friday, the remaining 114 players played four qualifying rounds on Thursday, August 22, divided between Fürth and Nuremberg to fill the 14 free places.

48 participants in the qualification came from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including Phil Barnes - the German-Englishman had made it into the main tournament in the previous two years - and the Austrian national champion Andreas Ploner. But like all of their compatriots, they failed prematurely. Only Wan Chooi Tan, who lives in Belgium, and the Indian David Singh made it through the qualification as non-British.

There were also six women among the participating amateurs. In addition to world champion Reanne Evans , Anita Maflin, the wife of professional Kurt Maflin , who lives in Norway, was there for the first time . It was the first Main Tour tournament in the history of snooker in which a couple took part as a player. Tatiana and Ben Woollaston also participated in the tournament together, but she as referee.

The tournament mode was best-of-seven for all games including the finals . The winners of each game are marked in bold, the abbreviation kl. means that the respective player has moved into the next round without a fight (by not showing up by the opponent).

Main tournament

The main tournament began with the fifth round of the tournament with 128 participants. The top half of the seeding list played its first three rounds on Friday, August 23rd, and the bottom half was at the tables on Saturday. The last four rounds from the round of 16 to the final were played on the final Sunday.

Round 1 to the round of 16

The biggest surprise of the first day was the elimination of world number three, Judd Trump , who was defeated by Irish David Morris , who only returned to the Main Tour this season, in the third round, although he had previously won convincingly against Graeme Dott . World number two and defending champion Mark Selby was spared a similar fate . He was able to turn a 1: 3 deficit against Martin O'Donnell into a 4: 3 victory. The Northern Irishman Mark Allen also retired on Friday and even in the first round. World number one Neil Robertson will also have bad memories of this tournament : The Australian not only appeared too late for his first game on the second day, which cost him the first frame, then Thepchaiya Un-Nooh quickly took the remaining three frames from him . For the Scots Stephen Maguire and John Higgins , the first round was also the last, Shaun Murphy and Barry Hawkins were eliminated in round two. So, in addition to Selby from the top 10 in the world rankings, only Ricky Walden and Stuart Bingham remained in the round of 16.

Only Ronnie O'Sullivan got through his first day really sovereign, he only dropped one frame in his three games. The reigning world champion only played selected tournaments and had therefore dropped to 23rd place in the ranking.

Even behind David Morris, Joe Swail was the lowest-placed player in the round of 16, but the previous year's finalist had already proven that the tournament suits him. The new professionals James Cahill and Alex Davies made it to round 3 before they failed to Ali Carter and Ronnie O'Sullivan respectively. The only amateur to win his opening match was Welsh Ben Jones . He defeated his compatriot Matthew Stevens 4: 3, but then lost clearly 0: 4 to Martin Gould . The Englishman Saqib Nasir came into the second round without a fight, where he lost just 3: 4 to Stuart Bingham. All other qualifiers lost in round 1.

In addition to the German professional player Patrick Einsle , the Swiss champion Alexander Ursenbacher was also set for the round of 128 in his first professional year. Both lost their opening games, but pulled out of the affair respectably against experienced professionals.

Quarter-finals to finals

While Robert Milkins , Stuart Bingham and Mark Selby performed their favorite role in the respective matches at the start of the final day quite confidently, Ronnie O'Sullivan had to fight with the Scot Anthony McGill , who kept up until the decision-making frame and only lost after he had already 44:31 on points had led. In the quarter-finals, however, the world champion made short work of Bingham and Selby also scored a 4-2 win against Milkins after two defeats. The two tournament favorites thus met for the "early final" in the semifinals. Selby started there with a century break, but then O'Sullivan took the lead and, after equalizing in a very competitive frame in the meantime, won a convincing 4-2 victory.

In the lower half of the tournament schedule it looked more surprising, Joe Swail defeated the almost 60 places better Welshman Jamie Jones , Gerard Greene had benefited from easier opponents with his win against Dominic Dale in round 2. He then kept the upper hand in the quarterfinals in the duel between the two Northern Irishmen. Ali Carter, who also slipped in the world rankings due to illness, reached the quarter-finals with a victory over the top ten player Ricky Walden . Against Greene he was quickly 3-0 down. Then he fought his way back into the game and was able to equalize to 3: 3. In the decision frame, however, both players seemed to have lost the thread and in a difficult game with many mistakes on both sides, the Northern Irish prevailed. For Greene, reaching the finals was the greatest achievement of his professional career.

The final was a very one-sided thing. Gerard Greene was able to put Ronnie O'Sullivan under pressure at the beginning, but missed too many chances himself. After the Englishman was not impressed by 18 of his own penalty points in the second frame and then went on Century course, the resistance was broken. O'Sullivan got really into the mood and won the third frame in two attempts with over 60 points each and the fourth with a century break in one of the shortest finals in tournament history.
