Marcel Eckardt (born October 27, 1989 in Gera ) is a German snooker referee.

Career

Marcel Eckardt comes from Töppeln near Gera . When he was around 13 years old, his interest in snooker arose from the broadcasts on German-language television on Eurosport . Since there were few opportunities to play billiards in his immediate home, he came to play late and was mainly active in pool . He did his first referee training in 2008 in Hohenstein-Ernstthal . He acquired the C license from the Thuringia regional association and then the national B license. In 2009 and 2010 he led games with professional snooker during an exhibition tour in Germany, with Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis among others . In autumn 2010 he applied to referee the then newly founded Players Tour Championship and gained experience at European tournaments and in the Main Tour qualification. At the Paul Hunter Classic 2011 he led the final of a PTC tournament for the first time. At the German Masters 2012 he was used for the first time in a full world ranking tournament.

For the 2013/14 season , Eckardt was appointed as the youngest referee in the then 12-member A-squad of snook referees at the age of 23. Since then he has been a permanent member of the referees who are used in the finals of all ranking tournaments on the World Snooker Main Tour , and especially in the televised games.

In addition to being the main referee at the table, he can also be used in the background on the monitor as a so-called marker . The tasks here are to enter the scores on the display boards and to support the table referee, especially in situations where the previous game image has to be restored after a foul and a miss .

As the youngest referee to date, Eckardt led the final of a world rankings tournament at the German Masters 2015 in Berlin's Tempodrom . He experienced his first maximum break in the role of referee in the quarterfinals of the same tournament; it was scored by Judd Trump . So far he has been the referee of the game for six maximum breaks by different players (as of August 2020).

In 2019, Eckardt accompanied the snooker world championship for the fifth time as referee , in which he was used until the semi-finals. At the age of 30, he was the youngest and first German referee to lead the 2020 World Cup final .

He lives in Berlin and is studying political science, administrative science and sociology by distance learning.
