Michael White and Shaun Murphy with the trophy

The Paul Hunter Classic 2017 was a snooker tournament of the Main Tour - 2017/18 season , which was held from August 25 to 27 in the Fürth town hall. Although, as in the previous year, many top players did not compete directly after the China Championship due to the low value and the unfavorable timing , there was a new participation record with 292 players. The reigning world champion and defending champion Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy , the only two multiple winners of the tournament, as well as ex-world champions Stuart Bingham and Kyren Wilson were among the best professionals who nevertheless included Fürth in their travel plans . Murphy made it to the final again, but he missed his third tournament win. He was defeated by Michael White 2: 4. For the Welshman it was the second ranking victory of his career after the Indian Open 2015 .

As in the previous year, a world ranking tournament for women was held in Fürth in parallel. There was a repeat of the 2016 final between Ng On Yee and Reanne Evans . This time the Englishwoman won and successfully took revenge for the previous year's defeat with her 4-1 victory.

Prize money

The Paul Hunter Classic prize money was slightly higher than last year, with an overall increase of £ 6,250. This benefited the winner, who got £ 1,250 more this year, and the losing finalist, but also the losers in the second and third rounds. Still, it was the tournament with the lowest ranking in the Main Tour.

Prize money
winner £ 20,000
finalist £ 10,000
Semi-finalist £ 4,500
Quarter finalist £ 3,000
Round of 16 £ 1,725
Last 32 £ 1,000
Last 64 600 pounds
All in all £ 100,000

The Rolling 147 Prize for a maximum break was £ 20,000

Preliminary round

Due to the large number of amateurs who had registered for the Paul Hunter Classic, the start of the tournament was brought forward from the planned Wednesday to Tuesday, August 22nd. 197 players competed for 33 free places in the main tournament and in three rounds in as many days the starting field was reduced to this number.

54 players came from Germany, three players each traveled from Austria and Switzerland for the qualification. Only two Germans survived the qualification: German runner-up Roman Dietzel and U-16 champion Umut Dikme. Ashley Carty defeated the German champion Simon Lichtenberg and then ex-professional Patrick Einsle . The Austrian number 2 Florian Nüßle made it into the third qualifying round.

For the first time, the world number one for women Reanne Evans successfully qualified for the main round, after losing only in the third round of her last two appearances.

Main tournament

The main tournament with 128 participants began with the fourth round of the tournament. The top half of the seeding list played its first three rounds on Friday, August 25th, and the bottom half was at the tables on Saturday. The last four rounds from the round of 16 to the final were played on the final Sunday.

93 professional players had registered for the tournament, two other players (Welshman Darren Morgan and French Niel Vincent, finalist of an additional U18 qualifying tournament) were also seeded for the main tournament. This left 33 places for amateur players who had prevailed in the qualification in the three previous days.

Round 1 to the round of 16

As in the previous year, Zack Richardson, an amateur made it to the second round again this year: The Englishman George Pragnall, who had benefited from Mark Williams' subsequent cancellation in the first round , fought his way through the decision frame against Barry Pinches and David Gilbert further. As with all amateurs since 2010, it was over for him. Other successful amateurs who made it into the third round with victories over professionals were Andy Symons, Oliver Brown and Joe O'Connor , who defeated the German professional Lukas Kleckers in round 1. The two amateurs from Germany, Umut Dikme and Roman Dietzel, did not survive the opening round either, although Dietzel defended himself against Jack Lisowski in the decisive frame.

The second German-speaking professional, Alexander Ursenbacher from Switzerland, at least reached round 2, but then lost to Tom Ford . The only woman in the 128 field, Reanne Evans , was clearly defeated 4-0 to Zhao Xintong right from the start , who then made it into the second round with ease.

Biggest surprise in Round 1 was the 0: 4 defeat of Stuart Bingham against Yu Delu . The defeat of Robert Milkins against the Maltese Amateur champion of 2016 Brian Cini was unexpected. Luca Brecel , the first professional tournament winner at the China Championship four days earlier , survived the opener against Ashley Carty, but then lost to Mark King . The second finalist from Guangzhou, Shaun Murphy showed a sovereign appearance despite the stress of traveling and only gave three frames up to the round of 16. Co-favorite Kyren Wilson came into round 4 without any frame loss. The number 1 Mark Selby had to fight more against it, especially against Joe Swail , whom he only defeated in the decisive frame .

Quarter-finals to finals

Two of the favorites had a bad start to the final Sunday. Mark Selby didn't have enough to oppose Michael White's dynamic match play , he was quickly 3-0 down and lost 4-1. Kyren Wilson, who was so sovereign the day before, was able to make up the 3-0 deficit against Ian Burns , but then lost the decider. Jamie Jones and Ben Woollaston made it into the quarter-finals convincingly 4-0 each . Gary Wilson reached his third quarter-finals in a world ranking tournament .

Mitchell Mann used the favorable position, defeating three amateurs in a row and reaching a quarter-finals on the Main Tour for the first time in his career. With a Decider win over Mark Joyce, he even made it into the top 4. Like Ian Burns and Mark Selby before, he had little chance there against Michael White. The Welshman reached the final on Sunday with his third 4-1. His compatriot Jamie Jones also reached the semi-finals, his best career result from the 2015 Australian Open . Despite 3-1 lead against Shaun Murphy, he did not manage to complete the Welsh final. The English turned the game and secured his fourth final in Fürth.

final

For Shaun Murphy it was the second final in a week, for Michael White after the Indian Open and the Gibraltar Open in 2015 it was the third final participation overall. Murphy had to be reminded of the semifinals, because he was quickly 2-0 down against the convincing Welshman and his own frame win was immediately followed by the 1: 3. The fifth frame could have been the turning point again. Murphy did not succeed in a decisive break and White was able to catch up. He still forgave the final black, although he had taken plenty of time, and the Englishman turned the frame with the last ball. But Michael White was unimpressed and took his chance again in the next frame. He missed a century break by just one ball and made the 4-2 win perfect. It was his second tournament victory after the Indian Open. For Murphy it was the second final defeat in Fürth and the second in a week.

Reanne Evans and Ng On Yee before the final

The world champion and defending champion Ng On Yee and the world number one Reanne Evans were set for the elimination round, 25 other women played in groups for the other places. Besides Diana Stateczny , who was the best German as in the previous year, only four players from Hong Kong and three from England were represented in the quarter-finals. As expected, Ng - against Stateczny - and Evans reached the semi-finals, opponents were world number six Rebecca Kenna (formerly Granger) and number 14 So Man Yan. Although both favorites were behind at times, they prevailed in the end. So the second PHC women's final was Evans against Ng On Yee, but this time the Englishwoman returned the favor for the previous year's defeat and clearly won 4-1.
