Antoni Kowalski (born February 9, 2004 ) is a Polish snooker player who won the IBSF U16 World Snooker Championship 2019 and the 2020 Polish Snooker Championship .

Career

Kowalski was born in 2004, comes from Zielona Góra , started snooker at the age of 6, usually trains with Marcin Nitschke and in 2014 took part in the Polish snooker championship and the Gdynia Open without much success . From 2014, however, he reached the finals of some Polish junior championships; so he became Polish U14 champion in 2014. While he had no success again the next year at the Gdynia Open , he reached the second round of the Polish championship, but was eliminated there. At the U21 amateur world championships of the same year and at the European championships in 2016 , however, he was eliminated in the group stage, whereas he had more success at the U18 European championships and only had to admit defeat in the first main round. He also won a game at the Gdynia Open for the first time, but was still eliminated in qualifying. Even in the Polish championship he had no chance and this time retired from the group stage. Nevertheless, he was also successful in 2016 when he won an important amateur tournament with adult participants in Szczecin.

He also took part in the U18 World Amateur Championship in 2016 without reaching the main round. He only managed to do this again at the 2017 U18 European Championship , where he immediately had to admit defeat to Dylan Emery . But then he again missed a place in the main round at the Polish championship. A short time later he was eliminated from the qualification at the Paul Hunter Classic , but moved into the round of 16 at the U16 amateur world championship , where he was defeated by the later finalist Mikhail Terekhov. At the Polish championship in 2018 he also managed to take part in the round of 16, but lost to Michał Zieliński there . He also reached the main round at the U18 European Championship , but was eliminated there by Florian Nüßle .

In the summer of 2018, Kowalski took part again in the Paul Hunter Classic , but lost in qualification to Brian Cini . He was then eliminated from the 2018 U16 Amateur World Championship , the 2019 Polish Championship and the European U18 Championship in the same year in the round of 16 and lost to the last 32 of the U21 European Championship . However, he then achieved his first major success, when he reached the final of the U16 World Cup and defeated Bulcsú Révész in this . Thus he became the first Pole to win an international snooker tournament. After being eliminated in the last 32 of the World Amateur Championship , Kowalski made it to the round of 16 at the 2020 WSF Junior Open , but then lost to Sean Maddocks . He then reached another final at the Polish champions and was crowned Polish champions with a 6: 4 victory over Mateusz Baranowski . He did not have to give up a single frame until the end game and played a 106 break in this. He had previously won the Polish U18 championship. He then reached the quarter-finals of the U18 European Championship and the second round of the U21 counterpart despite an ankle injury .

After the COVID-19 pandemic , Kowalski was invited by the world association to qualify for the 2020 World Snooker Championship . There he met the Englishman David Lilley in the first round , whom he defeated 6-4. In the second round, however, he was defeated by the later qualifier Elliot Slessor .
