The World Snooker Federation (short: WSF , not to be confused with the organization "World Snooker Tour") is a sports association with the aim of centralizing and globalizing the sport of snooker .

history

Billiards should become an Olympic discipline by 2024, but the IOC has set regulations for this. The IOC's Agenda 2020 provides information about this, it should also open the gates to new sports. The prospect of participating in the Olympic Games and the associated popularization, TV broadcasts and sponsorship funds let the disputes between the International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) and World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association (WPBSA) level off and ended on October 5, 2017 for the official announcement of the founding of the WSF. The WSF brings together both amateur and professional snooker and will be a key organization as snooker seeks to take its place in the Olympic and Paralympic programs. The WSF was officially founded as a not-for-profit International Sports Federation (IF) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where many influential international sports organizations are based, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The former snooker pro Jason Ferguson , who has been chairman of the WPBSA since 2010 (as of July 2018) , was appointed as the first president . As early as 1998 he was elected to the WPBSA board as a player representative.

The WSF invites national umbrella organizations and regional umbrella organizations (e.g. Europe) to become members.

Regional and national associations

The WSF is open to membership of regional organizations and national associations around the world. With the support of these bodies and associations, the WSF will be part of an international structure for snooker and billiards in which national associations can develop new opportunities. Since 2010 the WPBSA and World Snooker Tour have hosted many new events in close collaboration with national associations such as the Indian Open , the Riga Open , the 6-Red World Championship in Thailand and various ranking events in China.

The WSF also offers important game opportunities through the implementation of a uniform WSF Amateur Championship. This new, mixed “gender event” is open to the elite players of the national associations who are members of the WSF and offer the opportunity to qualify for a place on the World Snooker Tour . The first edition of this championship took place before the start of the 2018/19 snooker season .

The WPBSA has announced that it will help fund a new Challenge Tour which, along with the World Snooker Tour, will lead to the development of elite trails for top amateurs and new, emerging talent. National associations that are WSF members will have additional opportunities to host some of these events.

Board

The WSF is run by a board of directors who will ensure that appropriate governance and accounting practices are in place. The board is supported by a newly constituted council consisting of up to 10 people from all over the world who represent different regions and continents. The WSF strives to bring together a diverse and multinational team.

Speaking at the founding event, Chairman Jason Ferguson said:

“After a reorganization of professional sport in 2010, the World Professional Snooker Tour has never been stronger. We have seen unprecedented growth and are now a truly global sport. With this growth, it is our responsibility to ensure sustainable career paths for elite talent and play opportunities for everyone at all levels. We need to make sure that there are no barriers in our sport, regardless of politics, race, gender or disability. Only when we achieve this can we be considered a "real sport". There are some amazing people all over the world, company directors, players, officials and referees, many of whom volunteer to support our sport. It is the vision of the WSF to deal with these people from our international sports community. "
