The United States Billiard Association is the US umbrella organization for billiards based in East Islip , New York . It is one of 21 national associations of the American continental association Confederación Panamericana de Billar (CPB).

history

The history of the association is actually the history of three separate organizations in the United States - the USBA itself, the previous Billiard Federation of the USA (BFUSA) and finally the American Billiard Association (ABA).

BFUSA - 1966-1968

Founded by Robert Byrne, Edward Courtney and Virgil E. Erikson in 1966, the BFUSA was a non-profit organization that promoted and further developed the sport of billiards, in particular three- cushion billiards, in the United States. In the year it was founded, it was recognized as a North American subsidiary by the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB). With the creation of the BFUSA it was now possible for US players to qualify for the world championships organized by the UMB.

The BFUSA, authorized by the UMB, started a special "World Invitational Tournament" and in October 1966 authorized six of the best three-cushion players in the world to compete in San Francisco . Two players each from the European ( CEB ), Asian ( ACBC ) and South American ( CPB ) confederations and three players from the United States rounded off the field.

In accordance with its own plans to rejuvenate the game of billiards in the country, the BFUSA organized corresponding tournaments throughout the USA in the second half of 1967. It was the first in more than fifteen years. All efforts culminated in the fact that from February 6 to 10, 1968 in San Jose , California , the BFUSA was able to hold its first USA National Championships in three cushion. Allen Gilbert , the first title holder, then took part in the three-cushion world championship in Düren from April 24 to 28, 1968 . From now on, the association organized annual national championships, the winners of which the USA represented at the world and continental championships (Pan-American championships).

ABA - 1968-1988

The American Billiard Association (ABA) was founded in 1968 by Robert Byrne, Don Tozer, Merhl Smith, and Harold Schmidt to regularly organize three-hand tournaments across the Midwest . It spread over time across the United States and was divided into East, Central and West Divisions.

USBA - since 1988

In 1988 the BFUSA and the ABA merged to form the USBA (United States Billiard Association). To this day, she takes care of matters relating to the US three-cushion.
