Allen Gilbert
Allen "Al" Gilbert (* 1939 ; † July 15, 2006 in Los Angeles , USA ) was an American three-cushion player , multiple US champion, author and billiards teacher.
Career
Gilbert, who lives in Los Angeles, was a nine-time US three-cushion champion, author of a billiard book about positional play in three-cushion (diamond system) and a respected billiard teacher. In 1999 he was named one of the 50 best US players of the 20th century by the Billiards Digest . Gilbert first took part in the three-cushion world championship in Düren in 1968 . Until 1988 he played a total of 11 world championships, where he achieved his best placement at the domestic World Cup in 1978 in Las Vegas with fifth place. At the first three-cushion World Cup in Paris in 1986, he won the bronze medal behind Belgian Raymond Ceulemans and Nobuaki Kobayashi from Japan.
Gilbert died after a long illness in July 2006 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Los Angeles.
