The three-cushion World Cup is an international tournament series in carom , which has been held between three and ten times a year since 1986.
history
The World Cup was founded in 1985 by Werner Bayer, a billiards enthusiast and patron. He wanted to give amateur players the chance of a professional career through better earnings. In order to differentiate himself from the amateurs when playing, he introduced the blue cloth to the World Cups. The book that he later published about the history of "his" World Cup is therefore also called "Das Blaue Karree - The Blue Square". The blue cloth later found its way into the Bundesliga and is still a distinguishing feature of carom billiards today.
He called the association " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) and in 1986 the first tournament was held in Paris. As a patron he had good contacts to sponsors, and the tournament quickly developed into a popular meeting place for players and spectators. The World Cup had one of the highest prizes at the time. From 1986 to 1989 the prize money per tournament was around 100,000 DM, the winner received 50,000 DM. The BWA organized the World Cup together with the world association, the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB).
Between 1988 and 1994 the UMB itself no longer hosted any world championships and so the World Cup became a quasi World Cup for four years (1988–1991) in which the overall World Cup winners were named world champions. In 1994 there were differences between the two associations. The UMB then blocked players (including players' women!), Referees and organizers who took part in the World Cup from participating in the UMB and CEB tournaments. Between 1994 and 1997 there were two World Cups held in parallel. The BWA, as usual, played 3rd place (the only exception was the 1997/7 tournament), whereas the UMB did not and consequently there were two 3rd places (since taking over the tournament in 1999, this is with a few Exceptions, so far regulated).
After the dispute was settled, the UMB and the BWA continued the tournament together until the end of 2003 (World Cup Las Vegas). After Mr Bayer withdrew from the BWA in 1999 (World Cup Berlin) for health reasons, the World Cup tournaments were continued under the new leadership of BWA Cor van Erp. But there were again differences with the UMB. In 2003 the BWA dissolved and since 2004 the World Cup tournaments have been organized solely by the UMB in cooperation with a local host.
The tournaments organized by the UMB from 1994 onwards were mastered in cooperation with the European sub-association Confédération Européenne de Billard (CEB). Since 2004 the World Cup has been held as UMB / CEB (in Europe), UMB / CPB (in America), UMB / ACBC World Cup (in Asia) and since 2014 as UMB / ACC in Africa. The prize money has been € 106,500 per tournament since 2018.
The individual results of the 1997/1 World Cup were lost immediately after the tournament and could not be researched by the billiard archivists Heinrich Weingartner and Dieter Haase (both editors of the three-volume "Encyclopedia of Billiards") until today.
In 2017, for the first time, an Asian overall winner became the winner. The Korean Kim Haeng-jik was only the second non-European player to win this title since Sang Chun Lee in 1993. He made this victory possible with two tournament victories in 2017.
184 world cup tournaments had been held by the end of 2019. The Netherlands leads with 25 events, followed by Turkey with 24 and Egypt with 22. In terms of the host locations, the Egyptian holiday resort Hurghada leads with 13, Porto with 11 and Oosterhout with 10. Berlin and Antalya each hosted 9 tournaments.
mode
Initially, the game was played in the set system up to 15 points, with two winning sets in the qualification and then three winning sets in the final round. In 2013 they switched to the point system, with up to 30 points being played in the qualification and up to 40 points in the final round. At the turn of the season in 2019, the first final round will also be played as a group round (8 ×) with 4 players each.
Up to and including 2012, the shot clock was set to 50 seconds, from 2013 to 2019 it was then reduced to 40 seconds, with each player having a maximum of three extensions available.

Prize money and world ranking points
In contrast to the normal season, the rated game season for the World Cup runs from January to December. The overall winner will be determined after the end of the last annual tournament based on the achieved WC points. There is no separate tournament. To be able to choose an overall winner, at least four tournaments must be held during the current season (as of May 2018) . A match between the world champion and the overall world cup winner will take place in Antwerp at the World Super Cup & Player of the Year , organized by ex-world champion and world cup winner Ludo Dielis .
In the individual tournaments, the best 53 players will receive prize money totaling € 106,500. In addition, all participants receive world ranking points (= World Cup points).
At the end of the year, when the overall winner is chosen, the top twelve players receive a further payment in prize money. The prize money shown in the table below applies from 2018. The prize money for the overall winners has been discontinued since 2018.

- Record winner is Torbjörn Blomdahl with 44 individual and 11 overall wins.
- The general average (GD) of 2,777 was played by Daniel Sánchez (2017 in Luxor).
- The best individual average (ED) was achieved by Semih Saygıner with 6,666 (40 points in 6 recordings , played on October 27, 2018 in La Baule).
- The highest series at world cup tournaments has stood at 24 points since 2013 , set up by Jérémy Bury at the world cup tournament in Guri, Korea . Bury knocked out the game, which was set for 40 points, with a final streak of 24. This ended not because of a mistake, but because of reaching the goal of the game. On November 15, 2018, Cho Myung-woo from South Korea equalized the record. On October 25, 2019 in Veghel, Dick Jaspers also managed to set the record.
- One set in 1 recording (which was also the highest series until 2012) at a world cup tournament has achieved so far:
- Nobuaki Kobayashi (Valkenburg 1986)
- Torbjörn Blomdahl (Gent 1991, Istanbul 1995)

Tournament record development
In the set system, the best individual average (ED) is only rated in a game with 3 winning sets. This also applies to the GD, where at least five games must be played. Since the maximum series of 15 points was achieved a total of 42 times in the times of the sentence system, players who have achieved this number of points several times are only mentioned with their first series. The numbers in brackets indicate the frequency.
