The three- cushion world cup 1996/2 was the second UMB world cup tournament in the eleventh year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from April 4th to 7th, 1996 in this discipline of carom billiards in the Portuguese port city of Porto . It was the second three-cushion World Cup tournament in Porto.

history

The World Cup tournament in Porto was firmly in Danish hands this year. Half of the last eight participants came from the Scandinavian country. The winner was the only 19-year-old Dion Nelin. In the final, Nelin showed his class when he was able to defeat the current world and European champion Jozef Philipoom in five sets. After a 1: 2 set deficit, he won sets four and five and earned his first World Cup victory and also achieved the best general average (GD) of the tournament with 1.489. In the semifinals, he cleared his national team partner Hans Laursen with 3-0 sets.

Nelin won the three-cushion world championship for national teams only ten weeks ago together with his compatriot Laursen in Viersen and nine weeks ago in Marl the three-cushion European junior championship . He is considered to be one of the greatest three-cushion talents in European billiards.

For the new world number one Jorge Theriaga, the tournament in his home country was a little disappointing. He had to admit defeat to the eventual winner with 2: 3 sets in the quarter-finals after leading 2-1 sets. The old world number one Daniel Sánchez also failed in the semifinals after a 2-1 lead against the current world champion Philipoom. For the German participants, the World Cup tournament was disappointing. In the first round, Johann Schirmbrand lost to the Austrian Gerhard Kostistansky somewhat unhappily . Christian Rudolph was the only one to reach the last sixteen. Rudolph is now only 14th in the new world rankings. This puts his place among the seeded players for World Cup tournaments at great risk.

The exact price money could not be determined from the documents.

Tournament mode

In the qualifying round in groups, two sets of 15 points each are played in round robin mode. The group winners qualify for the 1/16 finals. There are also 14 seeded players. From the main competition (1/16 final), all games are played on three sets of 15 points each. Third place has not been played since the 1996/97 season. This means that there is no game for third place and there are two third-placed players.

The world champion and the European champion (continental champion) are no longer explicitly set, but are included in the world rankings. The world champion receives 40 points and the continental champion 36 world ranking points.

In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:

  1. MP = match points
  2. SV = rate ratio
  3. GD = general average
  4. HS = maximum series
