The three- cushion world cup 2014/3 was the third UMB / CEB world cup tournament in the 28th year of the three-cushion world cup. It took place from September 8-14, 2014 in Porto , Portugal . It was another tournament in Porto after 2008.

history

Once again, the large European football club FC Porto and its associated billiards department hosted a world cup tournament. Without these financial possibilities, such a tournament in Portugal would not be possible. The Dragão Caixa tournament hall is part of the home football stadium Estádio do Dragão .

For Daniel Sánchez went from time eternal once again in qualifying. Due to health problems, he could not play all the world cup tournaments and so he fell out of the seeded top twelve. He managed to win the group despite a narrow defeat against a very strong Ly The Vinh from Vietnam. The Vietnamese came up trumps in this qualification. Of seven starters in the main qualification, four made it into the main field of the best 32. There was a big sigh of relief for the many three-cushion fans worldwide. After a new association president was elected in Turkey, Semih Saygıner , popular with fans, was able to start again internationally. His problems with the previous president did not allow that in recent years. He then survived the first round against David Martinez from Spain. Against the record World Cup winner Torbjörn Blomdahl , however, came the end in the second round. Roland Forthomme caused a big surprise in the first round . He eliminated the world ranking compatriot Frédéric Caudron and played an outstanding tournament. Only in the final did he have to admit defeat to Dick Jaspers . Forthomme played at the same high level as Jaspers in the whole game and in the end lost very narrowly with 39:40 in 26 shots.

Tournament mode

A lot has changed in the tournament mode since 2013.

  • The sentence system was abolished because the dullness was not calculable. Matches could last between three and five sets. Good timing was therefore not possible.
  • The game distances were set at 30 points in the per-qualification rounds and 40 points in the main qualification and in the knockout games. A tie is possible in the qualifying rounds. In the knockout round, overtime is played in the event of a tie. Each of the two players starts with the initial push. Whoever scores more points wins the match. If there is also a tie in extra time, the kick starts again until a winner is determined.
  • The shot clock was shortened to 40 seconds.
  • There are only two wildcards for the organizer and one each for three of the four associations CPB , ACBC , CEB and ACC in which the World Cup does not take place.

Four qualifying rounds are played. From the last qualifying round, the 12 group winners and the three best runners-up qualify for the final round. The main tournament is played with 32 participants.

In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:

  1. MP = match points
  2. GD = general average
  3. HS = maximum series

Seeded players and wild cards

The first 12 players in the world rankings and the wildcard players automatically took part as players in the tournament in the knockout round. The first four of the world rankings are placed in positions 1, 16, 8 and 9.
