The three- cushion world cup 1998/2 was the first UMB / BWA world cup tournament in the 13th year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from February 18 to 22, 1998 in this discipline of carom billiards in Bussum in the province of North Holland . It was the first three-cushion World Cup tournament in Bussum.

history

The three-cushion World Cup is increasingly becoming a duel between Dick Jaspers and Torbjörn Blomdahl . This time, the record World Cup winner was in front again in the final statement. Jaspers had no chance in the final and clearly lost with 15:45 in 14 shots. The Dutchman Henk Habraken caused a surprise, who together with Marco Zanetti took third place. Martin Horn from Essen came for an unexpected success . He beat Belgian billiards legend Raymond Ceulemans in the first round with 3-0 sets and made it to the quarter-finals, where he lost to the eventual winner.

Tournament mode

The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 124 participants, 12 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. The main tournament is played with 32 participants. In future, 18 participants are set. The seeded participants are recruited from the best 16 players in the current world rankings. The whole tournament is played in the knockout system with three winning sets of 15 points each.

In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:

  1. MP = match points
  2. SV = rate ratio
  3. GD = general average
  4. HS = maximum series
