The three- cushion world cup 1993/4 was the 4th world cup tournament in the eighth year of the three-cushion world cup. The main tournament took place from November 26th to 28th, 1993 in this discipline of carom billiards in Tokyo . It was the sixth three-cushion World Cup tournament in Japan.
The two old masters Raymond Ceulemans and Nobuaki Kobayashi contested the final in Tokyo. However, both players had to master a show of strength in their opening match. Kobayashi was already behind the Dutchman Christ van der Smissen with 0: 2 sets before he could decide the match in his favor with 3: 2 sets. Ceulemans solved the same problem against Arie Weyenburg. In the final, Ceulemans was able to prevail, as so often in the past at world championships. It was his eighth World Cup victory. With his victory against Torbjörn Blomdahl in the semifinals, he kept the fight for the overall World Cup open. At the moment both are tied at the top of the ranking. But Sang Chun Lee is still doing well in the race.
The exact price money could not be determined from the documents. However, as in all BWA World Cup tournaments, it was at least 100,000 DM.
The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament again. From a pre-qualification with 96 participants, 12 participants qualified for the 1/16 final and got 6 points for the world rankings. The main tournament was played with 28 participants. The first four of the world rankings were set for the second round. The players qualified in Spa must take part in the pre-qualification. The whole tournament, with the exception of the small final, was played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each.
Final round
The tournament tree for the final round is listed below.
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
