The three- cushion world cup 2001/1 was the first UMB / BWA world cup tournament in the 16th year of the three- cushion world cup. The tournament took place from May 18th to 20th, 2001 in this discipline of carom billiards in Bogotá . It was the third three-cushion World Cup tournament in Bogotá.
history
Since a World Cup season is rated over two years for the first time, an organizer was included in a rating twice. The tournament started with a sensation. The record World Cup winner and again leading this season, Torbjörn Blomdahl , retired in the first round with an indisputable performance in the first round against Ramón Rodriguez from Peru. This gave his biggest competitors an opportunity to improve their chances of winning the title. So it came about that Semih Saygıner and Dick Jaspers reached the final. After 2: 0 set lead for Saygıner, Jaspers was able to equalize to 2: 2. The Turk won the fifth set and took the lead in the overall standings. To the delight of the large number of spectators, her compatriot Jaime Bedoya was able to achieve a podium place for the first time.
The exact price money could not be determined from the documents.
Tournament mode
The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 124 participants, 12 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. ^ Heinrich Weingartner: Billiards . No. 136 (June / July). Vienna 2001, p. 30-31 .
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the "
Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association
Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer.
From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
