The three- cushion world cup 1996/5 was the first BWA world cup tournament in the eleventh year of the three- cushion world cup. The tournament took place from October 1st to 6th, 1996 in this discipline of carom billiards in Oosterhout . It was the fifth three-cushion World Cup tournament in Oosterhout.

history

Like last year, Dutchman Dick Jaspers started the BWA World Cup season with a win. In his home country, Jaspers only gave two sets and is hoping for an overall World Cup victory again. The Italian Marco Zanetti , on the other hand, has to wait for his second World Cup victory . in his sixth final, he suffered the fifth defeat. Nevertheless, he got off to a good start to the season. In the semifinals he was able to throw the overall World Cup winner of the last two years, Torbjörn Blomdahl , out of the tournament with a class performance. Ex-world and European champion John Tijssens, who switched from UMB to BWA, made it into the small final and ended up fourth.

The tournament started with a few surprises. In the first round, the 1/16 finals, the overall winner of 1993 Sang Chun Lee from the United States and the increasingly stronger Semih Saygıner from Turkey and Tonny Carlsen from Denmark were eliminated. Since their contracts with the BWA had expired and no signatures for a contract extension had yet been signed, a certain demotivation could not be overlooked. In his first match in the round of 16, Raymond Ceulemans , who is concerned with the idea of resignation, also had to pass and lost to Tijsses.

The exact price money could not be determined from the documents. However, as in all BWA World Cup tournaments, it was at least 100,000 DM.

The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament again. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 124 participants, 10 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. The main tournament is played with 28 participants. The first four of the world rankings are set for the round of 16. In future, 20 participants are set. The seeded participants are recruited from the best 14 players in the world rankings (as of September 1, 1995) as well as two national and international wildcards. The whole tournament, with the exception of the small final, is played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each. (Press release by BWA.Ghent, January 8, 1994.)

From 1995 onwards there was no more qualification tournament in Spa.
