history
In a tournament of surprises, Dick Jaspers was able to gain a lead of 45 points over his greatest competitor Torbjörn Blomdahl with his ninth World Cup victory . The tournament started with a little sensation. The current overall World Cup winner, world and European champion, lost in the first round to the young Spanish junior European champion from 1997 Xavier Yeste after a 2: 1 lead with 2: 3 sets. Dick Jaspers narrowly escaped the same fate. Against the young Dane Jacob Haack-Sörensen, he won the fifth set with 15:13 in twelve recordings in his 3-2 victory. The record world champion Raymond Ceulemans also failed in the first round against the Dutchman Ben Velthuis. With relatively clear results, the Portuguese Jorge Theriaga was able to fight his way to the final. Here he was very narrowly defeated by Jaspers with 14:15 in twelve shots in the fifth and thus decisive set. The good Dutch result was complemented by Ben Velthuis and Raimond Burgman, who both took third place.
Tournament mode
The World Cup tournament was played as an open tournament. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 124 participants, 12 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. The main tournament is played with 32 participants. In future, 18 participants are set. The seeded participants are recruited from the best 18 players in the current world rankings. The whole tournament is played in the knockout system with three winning sets (GS) of 15 points.

^ Heinrich Weingartner: Billiards . No. 108 . Vienna October 1998, p. 5-9 .
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the "
Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association
Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer.
From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
