Peter de Backer (born January 2, 1967 ) is a Belgian billiards player and entrepreneur.
Private
His parents were father François de Backer and mother Edwighe Coppens, with whom he grew up with his only sister. He was introduced to billiards at an early age. At the age of seven, his father played carom and golf billiards (bumper pool) at a high level, he was allowed to pick up the cue and toggle it for the first time. His father became his coach in the early days.
Career
At the age of 11, de Backer became a member of the “BC Sint-Anna” billiards club and immediately won the club championship and the Aalst city cup . With the expert support of his father, he climbed two classes a year and, at the age of 16, received lessons from his professor Emile Wafflard for the first time . As an all-round talent, he played all disciplines on small billiards (2.30 m) in excellent form. He always combined billiards with billiards. In golf he won the coveted “Trophy of Champions” title three times and was Belgian champion in both individual and team with Frank Van Liefferinge. This makes him the only player to have won the Belgian title in both carom and golf billiards. With Emile Wafflard, he quickly made the transition from small to large billiards (2.84 m). He also rose to the junior class of three cushion .
He had his first international success in 1988 with the bronze medal in the cadre at the European Junior Championship. 1991 he became European champion in this discipline for the first time, a second European title was added in 1993 and the third gold medal a year later. At the three-cushion world championship he won bronze three times, at the three-cushion world cup he made it to the final in Hurghada, Egypt, but had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Daniel Sánchez .
In January 2019, de Backer was on the way to setting the world record in the highest series (HS) of 28 in the Dutch "Buffalo League" when he had to stop at 26 points because the game goal of 40 points had been reached.
De Backer is an entrepreneur full-time and has been running his own billiards shop "PDB-ART" in Aalst since March 2nd, 2009.
