René Vingerhoedt (born October 29, 1921 in Antwerp , Belgium ; † February 14, 2005 there ) was a Belgian carom player , author and multiple world and European champion.

Career

René Vingerhoedt was the dominant player in three cushion and artistique in the 1940s and 1950s . He established a tradition of Belgian dominance in carom billiards, which was later continued by Raymond Ceulemans and Frédéric Caudron . To this day, he is the youngest world champion. At the age of 17, he won the Billiard Artistique World Championship in Marseille in 1939 , having already become Belgian three-cushion and art push champion . Twice, in 1948 and 1960, he was three-cushion world champion in Buenos Aires . Shortly thereafter, he announced that he would be converting to professional billiards, which at the time was still a strict separation from amateur sports. He was not allowed to participate in any WM or EM of the UMB / CEB . In the following years he was on the road as a trainer in many European countries and was thus significantly involved in raising the European level of performance.

As with his successors, the number of titles can hardly be counted. In 1952 he was the first player who broke the "magic" limit of 1.0 GD at an EM or World Cup at the European three-cushion championship with 1.023 GD . With 30 titles in Belgium, after Raymond Ceulemans {61} and Frédéric Caudron {85}, he is the most successful billiards player of all time.

René Vingerhoedt also worked as a trainer for the German Billiards Association for several years .

He once said of himself: “Ik ben voor de biljart made” (I'm made for billiards) .
