Cho Myung-woo (* 1998 ) is a South Korean carom player and world champion in three cushion .

Career

Cho, who lives in Suwon , one of the carom strongholds of South Korea, is one of the young Korean talents in the international three-band scene . He achieved his first international success at the age of 15 at the 2013 Junior World Championships in Corinth, Greece (Peloponnese). In the very first game against the then 11-year-old Greek hopefuls Dimitrios Seleventas, he showed his skill level by winning the game 25: 3 in just 25 minutes. At half-time after only 6 shots he was already leading 15-0. The individual average (ED) of 2.083 was also a record. It remained the best game of the tournament. In the end he received the bronze medal. At the following World Cup in Sluiskil , the Netherlands , he was in the final, but had to admit defeat to the more experienced Frenchman Adrien Tachoire with 25:35. 2016 was his most successful year to date. In August, he first won the Yamani Cup in Tokyo in honor of Kim Kyung-roul and dethroned four-time world champion Daniel Sánchez from Spain. The field of 11 participants was definitely top-class, among them Ryūji Umeda (winner 2013) and Lee Choong-bok . Then in October his first medal at the domestic three-cushion World Cup in Guri. He is the youngest participant in the finals since this tournament was founded. The highlight was his victory at the Junior World Championships in December in El-Guna, Egypt . There he beat his compatriot Shin Jung-ju in the final with 35:25. Immediately afterwards he took part in the last World Cup of the year, played his way through all four qualifying rounds to the final round, but failed there in the first round to Kang Dong-koong with 24:40.

2017

After his successful year in 2016, he made it into the final round at the first World Cup 2017 in Bursa, Turkey , but had to admit defeat in the first round by his compatriot Choi Sung-won . At the second World Cup in March / April in Luxor , he finished qualifying ahead of Lee Chung-bok and made it into the final round for the third time in a row. There he beat old master Eddy Merckx from Belgium in the first round , then the Vietnamese Tran Quyet Chien and finally the Turkish old master Semih Saygıner before losing in the semifinals to the Dutch world champion Dick Jaspers with 40:21. It is his second World Cup bronze medal. He shared the podium with Tayfun Taşdemir from Turkey.

In August 2017 he became Korean champion for the first time as the youngest player to date. He was expected to have a good chance of finishing the 3rd  LG Cup in September with a medal.

2018

In February 2018, the 19-year-old managed a series of 32 points in a training game in just 13 minutes. The YouTube video listed on the web links speaks of a world record, but it was not one because no official referee was present and Raymond Ceulemans played a series of 32 in front of him in the 1990s (also unofficially) and Dick Jaspers an extended series in 2008 of 34 played. Still an outstanding achievement, since such a high streak requires a lot of experience, which most players only have in their mid-20s.

At the 2018 Junior World Championships in Izmir, Turkey, Cho finished his last group game with a new individual average (ED) junior record of 5,000, beating his own record from the previous year (2017 World Cup: 4,166). He defeated the host country's Alperen Cebeoglu 25-3 in just 5 shots. After beating the French Gwendal Marechal in 7 shots with 25: 6 (ED 3.571) in the previous game, he finished the group ranking with a general average (GD) of 2.777. In the final he was able to prevail against his compatriot Hang Dae-hyun, win his second gold medal and set a new record in the GD of 2.022. On November 15, 2018, in his native Seoul, he set the World Cup record in the top series (HS) held by Jérémy Bury since 2013 with 24 points in his qualifying game against the Dane Tonny Carlsen .

2019

At the first World Cup of the new season in Antalya, he did not get beyond the group stage of the main round and was the last to complete it. In Ho Chi Minh City at World Cup number two he failed in the quarterfinals against the Italian Marco Zanetti and came in 5th place with 3.333 in the individual average (ED) he shared the tournament record with his compatriot Cho Jae-ho and Frédéric Caudron , the eventual winner. He still set the tournament record in the general average (GD) with 2,443. In Blankenberge, Belgium, Cho couldn't get past Semih Saygıner and the eventual finalist Martin Horn in the group stage and finished in 19th place overall. In July, at the fourth World Cup in Porto, he reached the semifinals and was inferior to his compatriot Kim Haeng-jik . His greatest success to date, apart from the two titles at the Junior World Championships, he achieved at the beginning of September at the LG Cup in Hanam. In the final, he clearly defeated the Turk Sagıner with 40:16 in 17 shots and was able to receive the winner's check for € 65,000 in the high-dosed tournament. Sagıner, 34 years older than 21-year-old Cho, said after the tournament:

“He played very well in this tournament. I wanted to do a lot better, but I have to admit [...] he was very strong and punished me harshly. "

- Semih Saygıner : Markus Schönhoff, Kozoom

In his seventh and last participation in the Junior World Championships in Valencia, Spain, he won the final against his compatriot Ko Jung-seo a 35:24 in 19 shots and got his third gold medal. In total, he has earned six medals in the juniors.

In his first participation in the invitation tournament of the Lausanne Billard Masters 2019 in Switzerland, he was able to prevail in the quarter-finals against the German Martin Horn with 40:25 in 17 shots, met in the semifinals against the world number one Dick Jaspers to whom he was defeated 22:40 and one secure the two bronze medals.

At the Continental Cup at the end of the year, Cho improved his personal ED record to 6,250. He finished the game against Semih Saygıner from Turkey on 25 points in just 4 shots.

2020

Cho expects to begin his 18-month military service earlier this year. During this time he is not allowed to take part in tournaments. He will also have little time to train. He therefore assumes that he will not be in the usual shape after his military service and that he has lost places in the world rankings.
